EMS Week 2026: Improving Outcomes, Together

By May 1, 2026News

May 17–23, 2026

Every emergency call begins with uncertainty. A 911 dispatch. A racing heartbeat. A family waiting for help to arrive.

Across Western New York, EMTs and paramedics answer those calls every day. They step into unpredictable, high-pressure situations with skill, compassion, and resolve. During EMS Week, May 17–23, 2026, we recognize these dedicated professionals and the critical role they play in protecting our communities.

This year’s national theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” reflects what we see throughout our region. Emergency medical care is built on teamwork among responders, hospitals, agencies, and the community members who support them.

EMS in Western New York: Care That Begins Before the Hospital

Modern EMS services extend far beyond transportation. Today’s EMTs and paramedics deliver advanced lifesaving interventions in homes, on highways, at workplaces, and in neighborhoods across Buffalo and the surrounding region.

Their work includes:

  • Rapid stroke and cardiac recognition
  • Advanced airway management and cardiac monitoring
  • Trauma stabilization
  • Coordinated transport to specialized care facilities
  • Integration with regional trauma and emergency systems

In time-sensitive emergencies, minutes matter. The care provided before a patient reaches the hospital often determines survival and long-term recovery.

Because of the dedication and training of Western New York’s EMS professionals, countless patients are stabilized, treated, and given another chance each year.

The Human Side of Emergency Care

Beyond equipment and protocols, EMS is deeply human work.

It is the paramedic who steadies a frightened child’s breathing.
The EMT who reassures a spouse during a medical crisis.
The clinician who remains calm so others can find their calm.

These moments may never make the news, but they shape families and strengthen communities.

The 100 Club of Buffalo’s Commitment to EMS
